The girls love playing outdoors and while the boys are rather happier to while away their spare time on their X-boxes both Evie and Amelia love running free in the open air. We regularly go on walks and they love nothing more than being given free reign to play in our local park or finding somewhere new to discover! I love that they enjoy nature and I can remember when i was little playing out until mum would shout of us to come back in, or the street lights came on – ah the good old days!
I remember once playing out on my roller boots and getting my foot tangled in some vines, I went flying of course and ended up with stones under the skin of my hands and cuts around my ankle. Hobbling home all I could think was would I be in trouble for putting a hole in my trousers, how was mum going to get the dirt and blood out of my favourite t-shirt, the stinging pain in my hands and throbbing of my ankle were getting worse as I walked through the front door.
Mum took one look and didn’t mention the trousers, or the t-shirt come to that. I don’t remember much more other than the look of worry on her face as we cleaned up the stones and dirt. Gently using cotton buds to get the gravel out from under my skin, the scratches ingrained with muck. I’m sure I bit my lip, hard, and I am certain I leaked a few hot tears as mum used warm water to clean up the resulting blood from the open pockets of skin.
The gentle magic kisses and magic cream tenderly applied will have made my tears stop, even now I can still hear the rustle of the packet of plasters being opened. There is something so simple about an Elastoplast with your favourite character on it that seems to signal the end of the pain.
My girls are the same, no matter what accidents they have or scrapes they encounter, as long as I have a steady stream of Elastoplasts with their favourite movie stars or cartoon characters then I know it will all be ok. A quick clean up, some magic cream and an Elsa or Anna plaster, a kiss on the brow and some distraction technique in the form of an icecream or a Frube and we are as good as new!
