With summer coming to an end and fall on the horizon, many people’s minds are turning to how they are going to stay fit in the fall and winter season. In most cases, when the temperature starts to drop, those great summer fitness goals start to wane and you start to lose your motivation to do your regular workout. Here are a few tips for keeping that workout schedule going during those long winter months when the sun sets early and the temperatures are frigid outside.

Get a Gym Membership
Even if you have been exercising and are on a workout schedule that keeps you outside during the summer months, that doesn’t mean that you should just stop exercising until the next summer begins. Instead, start researching affordable gym memberships and workout in their state-of-the-art fitness centers instead. While it might not be the same as working out in the fresh air or taking off on a long run, it helps you get the exercise you need and who knows, you might even make a few new friends along the way.
Hit the Treadmill at Home
The last thing you want is to put on the pounds as fall turns into winter. Remember, there are holidays coming up and those holidays mean a ton of food. It’s also a fact that people eat more comfort foods in the winter months because they can’t get outside and be active the way they want to. If you want to keep the weight off, and if you can’t get out to go to the gym, try dusting off that treadmill in the spare room of your home. Even a few minutes a day on the treadmill will help you get some exercise and keep the pounds from accumulating.
Create a Workout Plan
You had a workout plan for the summer months, and even if you didn’t, you’ll stay more motivated if you have a fall and winter workout plan written up and posted somewhere you can see it. Whether you post it by your bed where you can see it first thing in the morning or on the fridge, where you’ll be reminded that you need to exercise every time you go to open it for a snack, being organized and having a plan is key to getting through the winter months without failing to workout.
Continue Eating the Right Way
While it may be tempting to eat a ton of comfort food when the snow is piling up outside, it’s still a great idea. If you are going to indulge in the gooey chocolate chip cookies, french fries, and other bad foods, then do so in moderation and make sure to get some exercise afterwards. There are good-for-you comfort foods out there as well. How about a steaming hot bowl of homemade chicken soup instead of reaching for that bag of chips and dip you’ve been eyeing? The soup is much better for you and works well to warm you up on a cold winter’s afternoon.
Get Out in the Fresh Air
During the winter months it is really tempting to settle in on the couch and binge watch your favorite shows on Netflix. While there’s nothing wrong with doing that on occasion, you still need to get outside and get some fresh air. Pick a day that it’s a little warmer outside, pull on some jogging pants and head out for a walk. Not only will it give you fresh air, but it’s a form of exercise and a way to mentally clear your thoughts as well.
These are just a few tips for staying fit as summer wanes and winter rears its head. Remember, though spring and summer will come again, you still need to exercise, eat healthfully, and stay fit in the winter as well.
