There is something so comforting about the flickering light of a candle, sitting snuggled up indoors while it blowing a gale outside! Watching the snowflakes (OK so slight exaggeration considering outside is more like summer than a UK summer at the minute!) floating down outside, and the kids skating on the ice….yes, in my dreams i live in an American Christmas movie!
Christmas to me is cinnamon and spices, warm Christmas cake and spiced orange! I have tried to be a cookies and vanilla candle girl but they are just too sweet for me and always end up smelling rather sickly. Gingerbread and cranberries all the way for me!
I picked up a couple of budget ones this past week and they are just as good as the big names, burning just as long and giving just as good a scent throw of something 5 times the price!
The first one up is the Winter Spice tin from Matalan, only £3 and has a burning time of around 15 hours (we have burnt it 4 days running for approx 3 hours at a time and there is still a quarter of a tin left). The fact it burns evenly is a huge bonus too as I hate waste when a candle burns straight down the center!
Second up is The Candle Company Apple and Cinnamon candle, burn time says 24hrs but I would say around 18. Since this was bought from Poundland I really didn’t expect much and there really isn’t too much scent through. Worth the £1 spend for the even melt and light scent.
Third and final in the cheaper department is this Yankee type in the form of Wickford & Co, purchased from Home bargains. Priced at £2.99 I was a little disappointed with this considering the over powering smell when you first open the jar. I would estimate the burn time being around 16 hours and has an even burn too.
The ideal place to buy candles that would pass as gifts or for a little more show is of course my home from home, TK Maxx. I swear I would live here if i could as every season is a joy with shelves of themed goodies, a complete and utter feed for my addiction of home decor!
The first candle I picked up was a fabulous Spiced Orange Clove by Dickens and Hawthorn. A deliciously spicy scent in the purest of white wax with gold flecked wick! Priced at £4.99 an absolute steal for this heavy glass candle with a burn time of 40+ hours and even melt!

Second is Silent Night by Bahoma, with fragrance notes of Amaretto, Vanilla, Musk and Sandalwood this smells more of how you would imagine Father Christmas to smell – a mix of aftershave and spice! With a burn time of an amazing 55 hours and priced at just £3.99 this little gem is a complete bargain! (Having just looked on the Bahoma site the same candles are priced at £19.99!)
Finally I couldn’t resist The Collectors Vanilla Frosting candle, now I know what I said earlier about vanilla but this one is so moreish! Instead of being a sickly vanilla this is a very rich almost thick scented candle that smells like a Christmas kitchen in mid bake! A whopping 15oz, in a beautiful reusable smoked glass container and only £6.99. I have burnt this one for the past 3 days and it has gone down less than 1 cm, very impressed and will be keeping an eye out for more of The Collector candles!
Do you love burning candles at this time of year? What is your favourite scent?
XOXO
Debbie
