When I was little there was always this feeling that old meant anyone over 30! Obviously now that I am 42 I don’t think that anymore and certainly don’t think of myself as old! My mum is 66 and my Nana is 94 so it looks like our family have strong bonds with this earth and if I live to be as old and agile as my Nana is then I will be a very happy bunny!
Not only does she still live in the same house she has for the past 20+ years but she cooks her own meals and takes care of herself, of course she has help from family but how many 94 years olds do you know who still have the independence of living alone!
Advance in healthcare and standards of living have improved quality of life for older generations, which, by 2050 will make up almost 16% of our population. Times are changing and we need to change with them to make sure we accommodate the elderly who are going to be part of our future, help them learn new skills and learn from the past too!
Bathing Solutions have launched a campaign called #BreakingBarriers which is about social skills and never being too old to learn new tricks! Now is a great time to join in with more community matters and get social, the internet is an ideal way to keep in touch with family around the world and there are courses out there specifically directed for the elderly to teach them how to safely use the internet and social media. What about learning how to write a blog? Cook like Mary Berry? Start an Etsy store?
Age is just a number and does not mean you can not achieve something new – take a look at Iris Apfel who at 94 has taken the modelling world by storm – appearing in online, tv and magazine editorials. Iris is prime example in breaking down those stereotype ‘elderly people’ barriers! If at 94 she can conquer one of the most competitive markets in the world imagine what you can do!
Bathing Solutions create bespoke bathrooms/walk in showers and so much more to help with some of the issues faced with getting older. Click on this link to find lots of community courses to enrol in and realise that you are NEVER too old to try something new!
