Gender reveal parties are still a relatively new idea, which is why many of us are left without a clue as to the etiquette and gift expectations for such parties. Let’s take a closer look.
While there are thousands upon thousands of stories online about gender reveal party gifts, there is no hard and fast rule. Some people say you should take a gift while others claim these are no-gift occasions. Tradition will vary depending on the group, and on personal preference. Generally, though, you are not obligated to take a gift, but it can be a lovely gesture.
Since it can be tough finding gender-neutral gifts for baby, you should never show up empty handed. If you do want to bring a gift, be sure to choose something for the hostess at the very least. There are loads of opportunities to find baby gifts online in neutral colours and ideas, and remember that if you’re invited to the gender reveal party, you are likely to be invited to the baby shower as well.
Nobody, especially new parents, are going to say no to a gift. If a family member or close friend is having a gender reveal party, then you may want to take along a little gesture. Besides, the best gifts are the ones that are not expected.
When it comes to picking the gift, focus on the mother-to-be. Consider something like a comfy dressing gown for her, or even a certificate for a prenatal massage, mani/pedi gift cards, or a few bits and bobs she is going to need, like baby toiletries, nappies, and blankets.
If no one else has brought gifts to the party, you can always quietly hand yours over to the expectant mother when she is alone so that other people don’t feel guilty.
Being pregnant is certainly not easy, and expectant mothers are bound to appreciate any love you offer. Some of the easier gifts, like baby clothes and soft toys are a no-brainer, but any gift, really, is sure to make mom feel more comfortable and loved.
Gift giving is really a personal matter. In some circles, people prefer to share gifts for any and all occasions, and in others, very few gifts are exchanged. If your circle likes to appreciate one another with gifts, it is better to err on the side of caution and choose a gender-neutral gift and colour. Nappy cakes are always a great idea.
If you’re in any doubt as to what to take along to a gender reveal party, you could always take a dessert. It’s just innocent, and works well as a contribution to any party. But, if no one else takes a gift, you won’t leave anyone feeling guilty with your tray of cupcakes or brownies!
Overall, don’t show up empty handed to a gender reveal party. Whether you take a small hostess gift or a gender-neutral baby gift, it is sure to be a welcome surprise.
