When you consider the huge expense of buying a home, it can come as an unpleasant – and unexpected – surprise when you realise there are even more costs involved with moving. There can’t be many other things in life that you hand over money for that stress you out as much, either!
For savvy home movers, however, a little planning and research can go a long way. Today, I’m going to reveal some super cool tips for slashing the cost of your home move and help you reduce those stress levels by a significant amount. Let’s get started and take a look at everything you can do to avoid overpaying for expensive removal services.

Don’t take everything
First of all, the more you have to move, the more you have to pay – it’s that simple. So, if you want to start making some serious headway in slashing the cost of a move, start decluttering your home – and your life. Go through all of your things – new and old – and ask yourself if you really need them. Get rid of everything that you haven’t used for at least six months – if you don’t use it by now, you probably never will. Decluttering could be the difference between spending a couple of thousand pounds on a huge removal truck or a few trips in rented white van – the cost of the latter being significantly less.
Sell your stuff
If you have time to sell your old gear, do so. All the money you raise can go towards paying for your removals, and if you sell enough it can make a huge difference – and the best thing is, you won’t even notice as it won’t affect your savings one little jot.
Seek alternatives
Most people use big removal companies because they are experts at moving large, unwieldy pieces of furniture. But there are alternatives. There are plenty of online courier services available these days which you can use to request drivers of vans, trucks or even cars to collect and deliver heavy goods. Companies and individuals will make a bid, and it works like a reverse auction, in that the lower bid wins your business. While there are no guarantees, it might be worth using these kinds of services when moving – and then it’s just a case of hiring a white van and moving all your boxes yourself.
Read the small print
Finally, when you are looking around for removal companies, make sure you are only getting quotes for what you need. Some services include packing, for example, and there is often insurance coverage thrown in just in case they break something. Ask yourself if you really need these extras, and don’t be afraid to ask for a discount if you know you won’t need a particular service.
As you can see, there are plenty of ways to slash the cost of moving home – it really doesn’t need to cost a fortune. What could cost a few thousand pounds can be reduced to a few hundred if you plan ahead enough. Good luck!
