There are so many different styles that you can explore and play with when it comes to designing your dream garden. From minimalist to tactically-full, the end result is always the same: a garden that you will spend more time in, do more in and make full use out of.
For a timeless garden that won’t need a rethink once trends change, consider going for a more rustic look. This is a look in gardens that never goes out of fashion, and requires little effort to achieve. It will always look timeless and classic – a real winner of hearts for you and any visitors you may choose to invite in.
While it’s not an essential, garden furniture adds a lot to what can be quite a bare space to work with. It’s not just pretty to look at either – it has a functionality which cannot be dismissed, and can add a certain je ne sais quoi to the whole image of your garden. Consider some classic garden sofa or perhaps some vintage-style metal chairs, and decorate with some vintage cushions and throws for the cooler evenings.
Garden ornaments can also bring out the desired style of your garden. Think outside of the box – anything that you may find in a garden centre can possibly be dismissed now. Go along to a local flea market or any boot sale that may be occurring nearby, and see what treasures you can pick up along the way. Curious finds such as a metal mannequin bodice can be intertwined with creeper plants such as ivy to creature a stunning, rustic work of art.
Plants shouldn’t be dismissed in favour of ornaments however, and there are certain flowers and shrubs which can really bring out the essence of what you are trying to achieve. Don’t forget that they come in a variety of colours, either – try choosing more muted shades of leaf such as a deep red or dark green to stick to the theme. You can allow for bright pops with the flowers, but anything too bright can distract away from the classic look; try looking at big daisies, roses and lilies for traditional flowers which will never fall out of favour.
Finally, bring the inside … out! It is always worth remembering that anything that looks good decoratively inside your house can also look amazing outside. Lighting isn’t just for inside a dull room; fairy lights, for example, are always a hit and so you should always try and incorporate it into your garden. Mirrors are good for adding depth both in the home and out, and make for an interesting feature should you wish to reflect them onto something which isn’t getting the attention you desire. Ornamental vases with delicate designs on can really help to bring the whole look of the garden together, and if you have spare wall space then why not put up a few photo frames? Make sure that they are watertight and are reprints of photographs should water happen to get in, so you always have backups. You could even put them in black and white or sepia to really give it that added rustic touch!
