Have you ever poured fats down the drain? Go to use a frying pan and empty the contents down the loo or sink? You aren’t alone! Did you know that over £20 million is spent each year on over 53,000 call outs to pipe blockages every year! That’s not all…
What’s the issue?
United Utilities deal with this every days of the year and coming up to Christmas we need to highlight the growing problem!
The average North West household pours 14Ibs of fat, oils and grease down the drain in a year. Across the region, this equates to 2.9 million stone – the weight of over 243,000 UK adults (more than the population of Oldham!).
United Utilities is therefore launching the ‘My Roastie Photie’ competition, asking people to post a photo of their perfectly cooked roast potato with the hashtag #binfat2winthat – giving five people the chance to bag £100 of food vouchers.
With this in mind Christmas is a great time to highlight the issue while also helping to solve a much debated issue – what exactly is the best way to make the perfect roast potato (there are in fact over 16 million Google page results for ‘perfect roast potatoes’!)
Should we use goose fat, dripping, olive oil or simply a bit of butter? Who knows, but UU would like to find out what people think while also giving a gentle reminder that whatever does make the perfect roastie, the perfect way to dispose of leftover fats is not to pour it down the drains.
Let me know if you enter as I would love to see some good roastie pictures – Sunday dinners aren’t perfect without a good roast potato!!
