Moving into your own home is an exciting move. It doesn’t matter whether it;s your first ever house, or your first jaunt into renting a place, you will get that thrill of being in charge of what goes into your new home. There are essentials that every single house should have, and at the most basic level, you need to have these ready to go!
You can always build on the items that we list below, but these are a great way to get started with your new house. One thing that we will say is that it’s very important for you to have an emergency fund to cover any Fisher and Paykel spare parts you may need for appliances, or any issues with breakdowns. Your home is your castle, but it can only stay that way if you look after it properly. Let’s dive right in!
We realise that this isn’t on the otp of the priority list for most people. Bedroom equipment, sofas and TV usually win as the first item on the list to buy! However, a vacuum cleaner is an item you absolutely want with a floor that gets dirty quickly. You need to buy the vacuum cleaner that is based on your needs, so if you have kids or pets, then you need a heavy-duty cleaner for your floor. If you don’t have carpet, you can still buy a vacuum cleaner! You can also add to the house with brooms, dustpans and brushes and a mop – especially if you only have wood or linoleum flooring.
You need items to cook with, eat off of, eat with and prepare food with – these are your basics. Most of your time in the home is spent in the kitchen. You need to make sure that it’s equipped properly, and while you may spend a little more cash than you planned to equip your kitchen, you would spend more money on constant takeout! You need everything down to the spatulas and can openers, so go through what you may need to cook with, and buy everything. And don’t forget the egg cups – the amount of times you will want boiled eggs and realise you don’t have egg cups will annoy you!
You need more than washing machines and dryers. You need to have laundry baskets, scrubbing brushes and storage baskets for all of the laundry room essentials. The laundry basics you have in the house will help you out – you will find that you need to do laundry and not have a thing! You shouldn’t forget the iron, ironing board and hanging racks, too!
It’s not just cupcake tins you need for your home, you need roasting trays and baking trays to cook on. You need to have the bare minimum for booking or you’ll have plates to eat from and cutlery to use but nothing to cook on at all. Always go to non-stick options and choose casserole dishes with the same mark!
Every house needs a set of glasses. You may not need posh silverware, but everyone needs to drink from something. Sure, the kids may be happy to stick their heads under the faucet, but you’re an adult! So, you need to think about the glassware you need for your home, and no matter how much cooking you do, you need to consider what you’re going to drink from. Wine glasses for occasions, tumblers for everyday drinking and plastic cups for the kids! Lastly, don’t forget the mugs for those hot drinks during the day. The coffee machine can come later! As you settle into the house, you can add that, the champagne glasses and more to the house to thicken out your collection. It takes time to build everything up properly, so don’t be afraid to make a list of things that you want to add later on.
We talked about what you’d need for your laundry, but what about the rest? Other than the large white goods, you could think about adding a microwave, kettle and toaster. The smaller appliances live on the kitchen counters and these will add to the quality of your life. If you want to go one better, add a food processor or a blender, too.
When it comes to seating, you can go small with beanbags on the floor, but the best thing to do is make a list here of where you need to sit. So, you have your dining table and chairs, then you have your sofa suite in the lounge. If you want to, you can add an armchair to the bedroom and you can even add a second sofa to another room in the house. Often, nurseries have an additional sofa and so do movie rooms (if you’re lucky enough to have one!). Choose your seating wisely so that you always have somewhere comfortable to sit.
There are some things that your home needs that you won’t even realise. The first home is often the smallest one that you ever have. So, you need to find storage solutions that work for your house no matter what use of storage containers in the kitchen, and don’t forget to buy a trash bin! You wouldn’t believe how many people forget to buy one of these! You want storage in the bedroom and the living room, from the shelving units for DVDs to the cabinets for your clothes. Storage is so important in the home, and you do need to have just some of it when you are starting out. You can then build on the rest.
Lastly, you need to have towels and bedding. Every bed needs sheets, pillows and a blanket and you all need to have towels for after showers and for the kitchen. These are the often-forgotten items you don’t want to forget, and you have to be smart about how much you spend, too!
