Its been a while since we had a day out so I guess it was long time coming and boy did we make up for it!
We knew from pictures the lovely Emma at Canny Food uploaded that the next time we hit Durham we needed to pay a visit to Velvet Elvis. Having walked past this store numerous times each week …cafe up stairs and buggies don’t mix… we had never really given it a second glance but knowing now that they made Freakshakes had us vowing to call.
Heading in to Durham early meant that we were the only ones in the cafe for a little while and it was lovely, friendly atmosphere, girls behind the counter who were happy to explain everything and talk me through what they did and how the room could be hired out for parties (can you imaging greeting everyone with a Freakshake!!) We ordered a Nutella milkshake with jam donut top and cream…usually its ice cream that tops the nutella shakes but I’m not a huge fan of the cold stuff so gave it a miss and made our own invention!
Amelias eyes when it arrived were perfect – an equal measure of shock and delight! The girls had even made her her own little version and she ate my donut too so I think she got a good deal on that one.
The milkshake was deliciously creamy and moreish, not too filling but yummy enough to stand alone as a treat/dessert!

After walking around town for a couple of hours we headed for lunch at Fat Hippo. This restaurant only opened on Friday and has been the talk of the town ever since, with its giant burgers and very hip vibe I can see this being a regular hangout for many! Again, lovely, friendly staff who offered a high chair for Amelia, brought and put it up for her then followed up with printout colouring sheets and pencils. We were seated in the window so had a fabulous view across the rooftops towards Old Elvet.
Having already looked at the menu online I knew what I was going to have (I hate panicking about not being able to choose something quickly enough when the waitress/er asks what you would like to order. I end up ordering something I see rather than something I want – does that make sense?!!)
I ordered The Italian Job – grilled chicken breast, mozzarella, sundried tomatoes, pesto mayo and rocket in a brioche bun, – sweet potato fries and coke, Amelia had a kids chicken burger and 3 times cooked chips (which looked delicious!)
This was by far the best burger I have ever eaten and the combination of the sundried tomatoes, mozzarella and rocket gave it a beautifully fresh feel too and I didn’t feel weighted down like I do when I sometimes have beef burgers!
Overall we were very impressed with the service, venue and most of all food! I will certainly be taking hubby and the boys there one day so they can all sample the deliciousness of Durhams best new eatery!
XOXO
Debbie
For those who prefer a more traditional home-like experience when on vacation, a timeshare can make sense. If you’ve gotten many years of good use out of your timeshare and now want to get rid of it, a timeshare cancellation company like Timeshare Freedom Group or Lonestar transfer may be able to help.
[…] one I cant help but giggle at is Amelia trying to eat my doughnut with a spoon! The post is here if you’re wondering why!? […]
What a fab day, do you know Ive never had a FreakShake or a Fat Hippo Burger?! I think I need to recitfy this immediately Thanks for linking with #LoveNorthEast
