Evie has been bugging us for months about getting a dog! I have enough to do without the additional walks and inevitable extra work that will come with one so its going to take some serious convincing before we consider it which is why when we were asked to design our dream pet with Petplan I knew exactly what we could do.
Having explained it to Evie that she would need to treat ‘her dog’ like a real one, get up to feed and walk it, play with it and make sure it was exercised and well loved she set about making her doggy design! Apparently it had to be a dark chocolate doggy with pink ears, nose and mouth, big blue eyes and a big nose, she spent ages drawing her and even made a large and small version with all of the essential bits noted!
We sent her drawing through to the lovely people at Petplan and forgot all about it until a parcel arrived addressed to Evangeline, that in itself got her in a tizzy! Inside the padded envelope was a satin pink drawstring bag, to prolong the anticipation Evie pulled out one of the ears first and let out a little squeal at how it was the perfect brown and pink combo!
Undoing the tie string on the bag and taking out ‘Ellie’ was such a delight to watch as Evies face was a picture, her new doggy was exactly like her picture!
Ellie and Evie have been inseparable since meeting each other, sleeping in the same bed (not sure that will happen if we do get a real dog)
Evie has been so good with making sure the boys don’t mess around with Ellie and has even taken her out with us whenever we have gone for walks, just like we would have to with a real dog.
Even stopping for toilet breaks too – yes we made her carry the poop bag too! lol They played together in the park and Evie even spent time pushing Ellie on the swing and round about etc…
We have made her fill up the water and food bowl each day and make sure that there is always a nice cosy place for Ellie to sleep. Overall I think she has been handling her responsibilities very well, I only hope that if we do give in that a real dog would be as much of a pleasure as Ellie is!
Obviously getting any pet is a big commitment so needs to be thought about seriously, including the fact you should have pet insurance too and at the moment, while we have two cats, getting a dog just isn’t viable. Hopefully at some point in the future this might change and I only hope this little bout of caring for something all her own has made Evie realise just how much work goes into caring for a new addition.
XOXO

This is such a wonderful idea to idea to teach children to learn to be ready for the responsibility for a pet. I had never heard of this before, and it is so sweet how they design the pet by the drawing that you send to them.
How great to be able to design your own pet, such a wonderful idea 🙂
This is so cute and a really good idea to help children understand what having a pet actually means. Brilliant idea!
