Before you have kids, travel is all about having fun and experiencing new things. Once you become a parent, you tend to stick to beach breaks, because you know that they are kid-friendly and easy to organise. However, after a while, beach breaks, whether they’re to Devon or Cornwall or somewhere a little further afield like the south of France or the Balearic Islands, become a little samey.
So, why not break away from beach breaks and do something a little different this year? Beach breaks aren’t the only child-friendly holiday – there are plenty of other options, you know. Below are some suggestions for family vacations that aren’t beach breaks, but are just as enjoyable for everyone.
Visit a city
For kids that love exploring, a city break is the perfect vacation. There’s nothing more exciting that heading to a foreign city and spending time exploring it, especially not for kids.
When choosing where to go, take into account your family’s interests, such as sports, architecture, etc. Say, for instance, you’re a family that is crazy about sports, pick a city to visit that has plenty of sports heritage to explore. Or, say you’re a family that is mad about art, then head to somewhere like Barcelona, where there’s plenty of street art, art galleries, and art museums.
If you’re heading to somewhere hot, make sure to book a hotel that has a pool, so that you can cool off after a day of exploring. Or better still, pick a city that has a beach attached to it, like Barcelona in Spain, Nice in France, or Miami Beach in Florida.
Go on an activity break
Are you a fairly active family? Do you love nothing more than trying out a new activity? Then an activity break could be perfect for you – you’d get to try out sports and activities, all while getting to know a new place.
If you want something different to a normal beach break but still want the chance to sunbathe, how about taking a water-based activity break? That way you will still have the chance to sunbathe, but you’ll also be doing all sorts of water-based activities.
When it comes to planning an activity break holiday, it’s a good idea to get an idea of what different locations offer. To do this, resources like ActivitiesAbroad.com can be incredibly useful, as they show you all of the best locations for trying different activities.
Camp in the wilderness
If you’re a family that loves the great outdoors, why not plan a camping break? Camping can be a lot of fun, especially when there’s a group of your going. If you fancy a break with a difference, then camping could be ideal. You could either opt to camp somewhere in the UK or somewhere abroad, depending on your budget and the type of trip you want.
The great thing about camping is that there are so many different places that you can camp, it’s just a case of choosing the perfect place. There are national parks, mountain ranges, towns, and villages – you can pretty much camp anywhere.
Beach breaks can be a lot of fun, but sometimes it’s nice to break away from the norm and do something a little different.
XOXO

For those who prefer a more traditional home-like experience when on vacation, a timeshare can make sense. If you’ve gotten many years of good use out of your timeshare and now want to get rid of it, a timeshare cancellation company like Timeshare Freedom Group or Lonestar transfer may be able to help.
Fab ideas! We once went on a camping trip with a group of us and it was such a laugh! Great fun was had by all x
