Having a large family means we have plenty of excuses to start new traditions each year. From being little and living at home with my mum, dad and sisters we have the tradition of always cooking the turkey on Christmas eve then having hot turkey sandwiches for supper. We have carried this on to our own family now and have our hot turkey sandwiches with stuffing while we watch Scrooged! (Best Christmas movie EVER!)
Another of our traditions is to have a gift wrapped up and on the bottom of the childrens beds on Christmas eve so that once they have been in the bath they get wrapped in a warm towel and head to their rooms. There they find the gift on their bed which contains new pjs and a selection box from which they can choose something for later.
One of our favourite newer traditions has to be the book advent we started a few years back, I am always on the look out for things we can make our own and something that we can do as a family to bring us all closer together over the festive season.
The rules are simple, all you need for a book advent is:
24 Christmas books
Wrapping Paper
Ribbon
24 tags (numbered 1 to 24 obvs!)
Each year I purchase books from The Works as they generally have great offers on bulk buys, the ones I got this year were 10 for £10 so for a little over £20 we have a new book to read each day! The girls love opening up a new book every day and it is amazing how quickly they get into bed on a night when they know they have a new book to be read to them! We got the children a couple of little box sets this year, one of which includes a Snowdog and the other a Gnome – this way they both get a soft toy each too and something to snuggle while we read them their books.
Do you have any family traditions or are you eager to start some new ones?
XOXO
Debbie
