One thing we know for sure about Poppy is that she has a love of the beach we didn’t think was possible. Watching her walk around the park is hard as she seems to struggle with every step, her body is old and overweight and she looks in pain with every step, but once we hit the beach its like she has a whole new lease of life!
Once we figured this out it was an easy suggestion for a day out but obviously living a little way from the closest dog friendly beach means it is a car trip every time. As I mentioned Poppy isn’t the smallest of dogs so the room in the car and mess that ensues with a soggy, sand logged dog is a pain in the butt!
After discussing this issue with the lovely people are Kurgo we were advised on a few products that might help with the situation. First up is this Heather Bench Seat Cover, this waterproof, stain resistant and machine washable cover is perfect for protecting car seats against four legged friends and also kids too (I think we may just leave this one in place forever!) Hook and Loop openings allow use of seatbelts, pet restraints, and child car seat latches and it doesn’t interfere with side impact bags either.
Did you know its the law that all dogs travelling in cars have to be suitably restrained, whether that be in crates or harnesses? I have to hold my hands up and admit I did not know this, I remember days when dogs use to travel with their heads out of the window so I just presumed it was fine to have them ‘loose’ in the car as long as you held them to prevent escape etc. However now that we have our own dogs, a little research showed that proper restraints etc have to be used at all times, even just taking the dogs to the vets.
There is no way we would fit a crate in the car to house Poppy so our other option is a belt style restraint – Kurgo Impact Harness. A four point harness which has been tested on 130lb dogs, easy to fit before you leave the house and then when the dog is in the car you simple get your dog to sit on the seat and fasten through the back of the harness with the seatbelt.
This is great peace of mind as Poppy would cause some serious damage not only to herself but to the rest of the passengers in the car should we get in an accident.
The last piece we were sent from Kurgo is a Winga, I have spoken about Poppys love of playing with balls etc before but how about a mini Frisbee! This was great at the beach as it meant if the Frisbee hit the water it didn’t go under either! This is great when you are playing with kids too, Amelia is a little bit too enthusiastic with her throwing! Everyone and their dog, literally, were playing with balls at the beach, at least this way Poppy knew which was her toy to pick up!
XOXO
