If someone had come to me a year ago and mentioned extreme knitting i would have thought it was something from one of those American TV programmes (like ironing board surfing etc….lol) Woolly Mahoosive is an online store that specialises in extremely chunky knitting yarn, needles and hooks, everything you need for an extreme project in one place and given the opportunity to work with them I jumped at the chance.
Having recently decorated in greys and yellow I opted for the Extreme Chunky Acrylic in Dove Grey which is on offer of 4kg for the price of 3kg at £55.

The ball of wool i received is man made 100% acrylic and a totally affordable way to create the uber popular gigantic blankets that are all over Pinterest and Instagram at the moment. Loose weave, super soft and with a lovely sheen it was a delight to work with – although due to the nature and weight of it I did have to have a couple of breaks!

Getting on the floor to work the last of the rug was the hardest as you really can’t hold the project on your knee like any other knitting or crochet item.

You can knit on 40mm needles or arm knit or do like I did and use a 50mm crochet hook – yes you read that right 50mm! It is a tree trunk of a crochet hook and looks fabulous even when not in use standing on my work desk!

Obviously with it being giant yarn it weighs an absolute ton but that also means it knits up really fast, with 5 metres per 100g you can imagine the weight of a finished blanket or rug. I opted for making a circular rug as the girls have always loved the look of them and I have wanted one for ages for their room! In total it took me just over 2 hours from start to finish but I swear it was the equivalent of a work out at the gym, my biceps were killing me!

You have to admit though it makes a fabulous focal point and is super comfy too, I hate sitting on the floor but this is so soft I can see it being our regular spot for reading!
Have you made anything with extreme yarn yet? What should I make next – I’m thinking a throw for sitting outside in the summer, keep the chill off on a UK summer night!
XOXO
Debbie
I was supplied with the items to create the project for this post. All views and opinions are my own and genuine!
