Easy Halloween Decor – Transform your home into a spooky sanctuary with this dramatic yet simple paper craft that creates maximum Halloween impact for minimal cost.
Halloween decorating doesn’t have to break the bank or require hours of complicated crafting. This 3D paper bat wall swarm creates an absolutely stunning focal point that will have your guests (and trick-or-treaters!) talking all season long. The best part? You can create this dramatic display in under an hour using supplies you likely already have at home.

Essential Supplies:
Time needed: 45-60 minutes
Skill level: Beginner to Intermediate
Cost: Under £5
Makes: 20-30 bats in various sizes
As someone who’s been creating seasonal content for 17 years, I can tell you that the most effective Halloween decorations are those that create drama through repetition and dimension. This bat swarm technique uses simple paper cutting skills to create a sophisticated look that works whether you’re hosting a Halloween party or just want to add some spooky ambiance to your everyday autumn decor.
The beauty of this project lies in its scalability – create a small cluster for subtle Halloween vibes, or go all-out with a dramatic swarm that covers an entire wall. Plus, it’s completely removable and reusable, making it perfect for renters or anyone who likes to change up their seasonal displays.
Start by sketching or printing three different bat sizes: small (3 inches wingspan), medium (5 inches), and large (7 inches). The key to a natural-looking swarm is variety in both size and wing positions.
Pro tip: Draw your bats with slightly different wing angles – some with wings spread wide, others with wings angled upward or downward. This creates movement and prevents your swarm from looking too uniform. You can create your own or download from one of the millions already online. I downloaded mine from Monday Mandala.

Using your templates, trace and cut 8-10 small bats, 6-8 medium bats, and 4-6 large bats from black cardstock. Keep your craft knife sharp for clean, smooth cuts – this makes all the difference in the final look. Alternatively, you could use scissors if you have a steady hand.
Variation idea: Cut 2-3 bats from metallic silver cardstock and scatter them throughout your black swarm for an unexpected shimmer that catches the light beautifully.

Here’s where the magic happens! Gently fold each bat down the edge of its wing close to the body to create a natural crease. Then, bend the wings slightly forward to give each bat a three-dimensional quality.
Family tip: This is a perfect step for older children to help with – they love seeing the flat bats come to life with just a simple fold!

Before sticking anything to the wall, lay your bats out on the floor to plan your design. I like to start with the largest bats as anchor points, then fill in with medium and small bats flowing around them.
Seasonal note: Consider the lighting in your room – bats positioned near lamps or windows will cast wonderful shadows that add to the spooky atmosphere.
Using foam adhesive squares, attach each bat to the wall. The foam creates just enough lift to enhance the 3D effect and helps the bats cast subtle shadows.
Pro tip: Attach the adhesive to the center body of each bat, leaving the wings free to create natural movement when air circulates in the room.
