We were meant to be heading south last weekend but in the end it didn’t happen, hubby still had a couple of days off from work though so we thought we would make the most of it!
We headed out to one of our favourite pubs that we have visited a few times now. The Duke of Wellington in High Pittington, Durham is an Ember Inns pub that has always served fabulous food and had a very welcoming atmosphere.
We haven’t been since the menu changed and we wondered how it would hold up against what we already knew.
We needn’t have worried! After being greeted with a smile, we were advised that the sirloin was sold out so off the menu, we were handed menus and seated with crayons and colouring book for Amelia. Both myself and hubby ordered the Garlic mushrooms, which although a little crispy, were delicious and the sour cream garlic dip was to die for!! Amelia had a kids prawn cocktail (£1) which she loved and was a real bargain, it was good to see kids starters offered too, instead of having to hurry ours down in the hope little ones meal doesn’t take too long to appear with the mains!
For mains Stuart ordered the Steak and Doom Bar Ale pie, Slow cooked farm-assured British steak in Sharps Doom Bar Ale gravy served with creamy mashed potatoes and British seasonal greens. I ordered the Slow Braised New Zealand Lamb Shank with a chorizo and tomato sauce. Served with roasted root vegetables and creamy mashed potato.
The meals were absolutely delicious and we will most definitely be back for more. Service was great, we were asked if our meals were ok and if there was anything else we needed, Amelia was fussed over and nothing was too much trouble for the friendly staff.
Highly recommended and at less than £30 for 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 drinks The Duke of Wellington gets a big thumbs up from The Nicholas family!
