There are a few common things people forget to check before moving home. I fell into this when I moved home recently. I was signed up with Sky but we could not find a suitable cable free wall to fit the dish to. My contract was cancelled – I just wish I was prepared beforehand.
Check Utility & Service Providers
There is nothing worse than finding out you are on a water meter, the gas/electric are payment meter or internet speeds are super slow.
The majority of companies will easily be able to switch over payment meters. However, likes of broadband speed could be an issue if you have a tv with game system in each room. You enjoy watching a streaming service or you spend a lot of time on the internet.
Working from home at the moment adds to this dilemma so being able to check your broadband speed is essential.
Here is the quickest and easiest way to test your internet speed.
Visit the Speedcheck website and click on the Start Test button.
The site checks the Latency, Download speed and Upload speed.
All of these are formatted and provided to you in an easy to read list. This includes stability and transferred data. It gives your IP address and also service provider should you need to contact them. It also says whether your connection is protected or not, giving you the option to install VPN for security.
There is a free Speedcheck app so that you can run speed checks on your devices too. Great for knowing I am getting exactly what I am paying for with my monthly contract.
Let People Know You Have Moved
Just how many people that need to know about your move actually do? You would be surprised at the amount of people who move and simply forget to tell anyone about it, including their family members.
As soon as you have your move date confirmed, start letting people know. Remember to go through all utility providers (telephone, internet, water, electric, etc.) creditors, the bank, doctors, your place of work and anywhere else that you correspond with regularly, and inform them of your new address and contact information.
Moving On A Weekend
Unless you really can’t control the situation, try as hard as you can not to move on a weekend. It might be tempting to deliberately schedule your move so that you have the weekend to sort your house out without taking too much time away from work, but it’s the busiest time of the week for removal companies, particularly during the height of the summer so you might struggle with availability. But not only that – think about the traffic!
Remember To Unpack Essentials First
The last things to be packed should be the kettle, tea, coffee and milk. That means the first box you can open will be the essentials! The first thing you are going to want to do after spending all day moving boxes is sit down and have a strong cuppa!
