We have been looking at where to go during Autumn and have planned a whole week packed full of things to do, the good thing about making friends on the internet is that they are world wide so we are off down South! Suffolk is somewhere I visited when I was small and with my family, we would tour the whole of the UK and Norfolk, Suffolk and Devon were favourite spots but since leaving home I haven’t returned, which is why I have collated a top 5 things to do in the area!
- Make your own gin at Adnams! Ever wanted to make your own gin? Then visit for a ‘Make your own Gin‘ experience at the Adnams Bury St Edmunds Store. Gin Makers will help you choose and measure your botanicals and at the end you will take home a 70cl bottle containing your own recipe Gin. Taking around 2-3 hours, gin is something that is very popular at the minute so this is top of my list!
- Abbey Gardens. This is rated as one of the most beautiful gardens in the area with highlights such as Appleby Rose Garden, originally an orchard, this is now a beautiful and established rose garden with over 400 rose bushes. The rose garden is named after John Appleby, an American serviceman who served with the 487th Bomb Group in Lavenham. A bench made from the wing of an American ‘Flying Fortress Bomber’ and a memorial stone pays tribute to the many US servicemen and women stationed in Suffolk. I love the sound of the Pilgrim’s Herb Garden which is planted with herbs and spices thought to ward off evil!
- A spa day is something that appeals to me greatly and if I can combine it with staying somewhere traditional and central then its a winner in my eyes. The 4 star Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa is located adjacent to the Newmarket racecourse and is home to the 2AA rosette winning restaurant, Squires and Roxana Bar. The spa is 5 Bubble Rated and features a spacious hydrotherapy pool, rooftop hot tub, private rasul, beautiful treatment rooms and so much more.
- Everyone loves a zoo so this was on the girls lists of things to do if we could. We found out that Banham zoo is not too far away from where we would be staying and it is an award-winning family attraction, one of the most exciting zoos in the country with over 2,000 animals from around the world. Throughout the day there are plenty of activities to thrill and entertain families, including daily animal feeding talks and displays, one of the most exciting Birds of Prey displays in the UK, our amazing subtropical house “Eureka” with free-flying birds and butterflies, our “Penguin Cove” an enlarged and enhanced enclosure for the colony of penguins.
- Suffolk Punch Heavy Horses has been recommended as a fun family day out. They have a pets corner, you can help with the lambs, see the horses being trained and enjoy a tractor-trailer ride around the farm. I get the impression it is a real working farm so a good idea for the girls from a home school point of view too to show how things work.
