If you have read my blog for a while now you will know that when me and Stuart met things progressed rather quickly, I shall give a quick recap for newbies! Although we are no longer together I still think about the time I lost my engagement ring.
We met one week and Stuart proposed the next, in the immortal words of every rom com on TV, she said yes. This was in May 1995 and we planned our engagement party for the end of that year. As we were already living together we shopped together for my engagement ring and, newly pregnant, we knew we wouldn’t be spending much on the ring itself as we had other priorities now.
We looked at lots of different styles and I adore the shesaidyes engagement rings like this one, the simplicity of the style suited me and I wanted something understated yet beautiful.
In the end I opted for a single set stone and loved it, it was just over £100 and that seemed like an awful lot then when we were buying baby bits too but we saved a couple of months and bought it anyway. Wearing it made me feel proud to be becoming a wife and knowing I was settling down forever, this simple piece of jewellery was a milestone in our relationship that would never happen again, the beginning of a phase of our lives together.
Having very seldom taken the ring off, only when I dyed my hair or did the dishes meant that it was the one piece of jewellery that I always had with me. Around 6 years passed and at the time I was working around 10 minutes walk away from where we lived so i would set off to work on a morning, dropping Benjamin off at school, Scott at nursery and then head to the solicitors. Winter set in and I had the cutest pair of gloves, problem with gloves is anything on your fingers (false nails, rings etc) hurt like hell so I had taken my rings off and put them in my pocket to put back on when i got to work.
I whipped the gloves off at work and put my hand in my pocket to get the rings….. GONE! Sobbing at the prospect of having lost it forever I set off searching the path I had taken and it had gone, no where in sight, I broke my heart all the way home! Whether someone had picked it up or it had fallen into some grass wasn’t obvious but either way it was gone and I had lost the thing I had been wearing every day for the last 6 years!
Times change and things happen, unfortunately we are no longer together but we are both in a good place and happy to see each other start again with new partners.
Over the years now I have seen some beautiful engagement rings, like the moissanite bridal sets which I would love. I think second time around I am wanting a statement piece.
Once we get divorced and I move on to another long term relationship I think if I was ever to wear another it would have to be one that my partner surprises me with. The thought of being whisked away on a weekend just two of us and starting things over appeals to me…right now though I am happy just enjoying my space.
Oh gosh, I can’t begin to imagine how upsetting that must have been. It’s often not the cost of something that matters, but the meaning behind it. I’m so sorry that your ring didn’t turn up.
