Build excitement all month long with this charming countdown calendar that creates daily Halloween magic and becomes a treasured family tradition.
There’s something absolutely magical about the anticipation leading up to Halloween – the excitement builds day by day as costumes are planned, decorations go up, and the spooky season atmosphere grows. This Halloween countdown calendar captures that building excitement perfectly, creating a daily ritual that brings families together while adding an interactive element to your seasonal decor.
As someone with 6 children, I know first hand how much kids (and let’s be honest, adults too!) love the anticipation of counting down to special occasions. This calendar transforms the entire month of October into a celebration, with each day bringing a small surprise, activity, or treat that builds toward the Halloween finale.
Essential Supplies:
Time needed: 2-3 hours total (can be done over multiple sessions)
Skill level: Beginner to Intermediate
Cost: Under £12
Makes: One complete 31-day Halloween countdown calendar
After creating seasonal content for so long, I’ve learned that the most meaningful crafts are those that bring families together repeatedly. This countdown calendar isn’t just a decoration – it becomes a daily family ritual that creates anticipation, conversation, and shared excitement throughout October.
What I love most about this project is its flexibility. You can fill each day’s pocket with small treats, Halloween jokes, family activity suggestions, or even clues for a monthly Halloween scavenger hunt. It grows with your family and can be adapted year after year as children get older and interests change.
Cut a large piece of orange cardstock to 18″ x 24″ for your calendar backing. This gives you plenty of room for 31 pockets while maintaining a manageable size for wall display.
Pro tip: If you don’t have large cardstock, you can join two smaller pieces with decorative tape on the back – this actually adds to the handmade charm and is completely hidden when mounted.
Sketch a rough layout for your 31 pockets before cutting. I like to arrange them in a pumpkin shape or haunted house silhouette, but a simple grid works beautifully too. Aim for pockets about 3″ x 4″ each.
Family tip: This is the perfect planning step to involve your children – they love helping decide how to arrange the numbers and often come up with creative layout ideas you wouldn’t think of!
Cut 31 rectangles from kraft paper, each measuring 3.5″ x 4.5″. These will become your daily pockets. Fold the bottom edge up about 1 cm and the sides in approx .25cm each, to create the pocket. Secure with double-sided tape.
Variation idea: Alternate between kraft paper and black cardstock pockets for visual interest, or create some pockets from Halloween patterned paper, as I have, for coordinated styling.
Using Halloween number stamps and black ink, number each pocket from 1 to 31. I love the slightly imperfect look of hand-stamped numbers – it adds to the handmade charm and vintage appeal.
Seasonal note: If you don’t have number stamps, hand-lettering with a black marker works beautifully and adds a personal touch that your family will treasure.
Following your planned layout, attach each numbered pocket to your orange backing using strong double-sided tape. Leave the top opening free so you can slip surprises inside each day.
Pro tip: Attach pockets firmly but don’t over-press the openings – you want them to remain accessible for daily use throughout October.
Cut Halloween shapes from black cardstock – bats, pumpkins, spooky trees – and scatter them around your pockets. This ties the calendar together visually and creates a cohesive Halloween scene.
