Can you remember being little and having a story read to you from the Ladybird series, The Magic Stone?
That was my favourite story, the one of a drifter who came across a cottage and got the owner to make a pot of soup from nothing but a stone…of course it wasn’t just the stone it was almost the entire contents of her garden but hey that was the moral of the story!
Having worked with Busy Bees nurseries in the past with regards to their speciality receipe books I jumped at the chance to try out their new Sensational Soups book. Containing 9 recipes created by Busy Bee staff around the UK with such names as Cowboy Broth and Buzzing Buzy Bees Soup from a Busy Bees nursery in Doxford Park to child care in St Albans, there is something for everyone. The one that jumped out at me was the Stone Soup and the story of the similar name sprang to mind immediately!

50g Onions
2 Cloves of garlic
50g Celery
100g Carrots
250g Tomatoes
100g Red Peppers
100g Potatoes
3 Sprigs of basil
1/2 ltr of water
3 chicken drumsticks
1 tsp tomato puree
Seal the chicken drumsticks in a hot pan then add the onions and garlic. Cook until the onions are soft and transparent.
Add the rest of the vegetables, tomato puree and water. Bring to the boil then simmer for about 30-40 minutes, until the chicken is cooked and tender.
Lift out the chicken, add the basil to the vegetables and blend until smooth. Strip the meat off the bone and dice then place back in the soup.
This recipe was so simple to make and the girls loved helping to chop up the vegetables as well as hearing the story of how when i was little this was my favourite story and Stone Soup could literally be made with any ingredients! Do like we did and leave the veggies whole, the girls love fishing around for carrots and munching on the veg so leave it as it is and just dish it up once the chicken is stripped from the bone!
It’s like magic! 😉
XOXO
Debbie

I’m waiting for a train in the rain and cold right now. Wish I can reach into my phone for that bowl of goodness!!!
I can’t remember reading this book! But the soup sounds delicious (once you realise it’s not actually made from stone lol)
