Can you remember years ago when you were at school and you had to watch those infomercials about road safety? Tufty the Squirrel and Clunk Click Every Trip stick in my mind which is exactly what campaigns are meant to do. They are designed to be informative but stay with you, I really don’t think you can be too young to learn road safety as there are so many cars on the roads these days.

Brake, the road safety charity, hold regular Beep Beep! days throughout the year. Organised by schools, nurseries, playgroups or childminders, thousands of tots and infants age 2-7 get to take part in learning the road safety basics through fun activities, while raising awareness among parents and the wider community about protecting children on roads.
During 2017 each Beep Beep! Day will have a different theme with brand new free and low-cost resources to help you run activities. This means you can run more than one Beep Beep! Day throughout the year and reinforce those important road safety messages. The confirmed national dates are 10 May, 27 September and 22 November 2017 and we were kindly sent a pack to work with the kids on getting the message across.

The Bumper Pack contains stickers and certificates for all children taking part, posters to promote your event to parents, a hand print poster for children to learn about holding hands, laminated activity and song cards, a large road map, activity poster with cut-out shapes, and even balloons!
Order your pack here for just £12.60 (per 50 children, including VAT) or email beepbeep@brake.org.uk.
Wednesday 10 May 2017
The second national date will coincide with UN Global Road Safety Week (8 – 14 May) by focusing on speed and the importance of drivers slowing down. The resources will help children understand road safety from around the world, the importance of keeping safe when playing outside and why adults need to slow down and watch out for children.
Funds raised go towards Brake’s work supporting families bereaved by road crashes and campaigning for road safety.
The girls love the interactive parts of the pack and the giant laminated world image was such an amazing way of finding out just how other children get to and from school in different countries. We ended up having to research more as Evie was in awe of the children going to school via boat each day, I think it really did hit home just how easy we have it in this country compared to others and seeing it in a way that relates to other children highlighted not only the cultural differences but just how big the world really is.

Of course, colouring in is a huge part of growing up so to have this as part of the information pack is a great way to start up conversations with little ones, Amelia is only 2 so not at school yet but we do walk Evie to school. She was able to point out that sometimes we walk, other times she gets to take the scooter. This then lead on to ways we need to be careful when walking to school, not getting too far ahead of mummy, walking with the scooter instead of flying down the hill on it as there is a road at the bottom and she may not be able to stop in time. We coloured the pictures as we went and she really did seem to take it in more than if i was just being a naggy mummy who wants to spoil all her fun!

Head on over to the Brake website and sign up for these invaluable campaigns, mention it to your local nurseries etc too – the more we get the message across the fewer unneccessary accident we have to hear about.
XOXO
