For your child to learn and develop, it is important to teach them the skills that they will need from a young age to be able to integrate fully into our society, and nursery school is an excellent way to enhance the skills that have been taught at home. If you are wondering if your child is ready for nursery, you can read an interesting article on the subject on various blogs. If your child is coming to the age when it is the time to start their academic careers, then here is all that they will need to know before they start nursery.
Before your child starts nursery or Kindergarten, it is important that they can communicate both their wants and their feelings to others. They should be able to say when they are hungry or thirsty, need the toilet, as well as having manners and saying hello, goodbye, please and thank you.
As well as knowing the basics of the alphabet and numbers, your child should be at a level that they can write their name. It is also a good idea to teach your child an emergency contact telephone number, as well as their address. The earlier you start teaching your child letters, numbers, and increasing their vocabulary, the better start you will give them when they attend school.
There are times at school when your child will need to change their clothes, especially when they have physical activities. As such, it is important that you teach your child how to dress themselves properly, which can also include tying their laces.
Another important lesson that your child should be familiar with before they attend nursery is being able to clean themselves properly. It is not often that a child would require a shower at school during the kindergarten years, but they should be able to clean their hands and faces correctly, especially when they have been finger painting! Make sure that your child knows that they need to clean their hands after the toilet, and also before they eat.
It is also important to try and make sure that your child is potty trained before they go to nursery school. All children develop at different rates, so some kids may be completely potty trained before kindergarten, while others will still need assistance from a teacher or other supervising adult.
As schools are a structured environment, it is important that your child can understand and follow basic instructions, such as sitting down, being quiet, or lining up. You can start teaching your child the basics by giving them instructions such as tidying up their toys or telling them to put their shoes and coat on and get ready to go out.
When you help your child to develop these social skills, you will give them the grounding that they will need to flourish in later life and provide them with an excellent platform to build on for the future. Remember, it is not up to the school to parent your child, as this must start from home. The school can help your child to become a well-rounded, and respectful, individual, only when as parents you build the foundations at home, to give the teachers the platform to help your child develop.
