When house guests come over with the intention of staying a night or two, they don’t expect you to have 5-star hotel accommodation but they don’t expect to be sleeping on the sofa either. In fact, a sofa is probably far more comfortable than what some hosts present to their guests. Wonky beds that feel like they’ll collapse at any moment, smelly linen that hasn’t been washed since there was last a guest in the room, and a lack of storage space can make your guests run in terror and regret ever announcing they wanted to stay the night. It can seriously hurt your reputation as a host and they’ll probably never come back.
So if you want to impress your guests with a room that feels like a heavenly retreat, then here are a couple of tips to help you make the most of your spare bedrooms.
Present it properly
If you’re going to show your guests to their bedroom, then you need to ensure it’s well dressed and that it looks like a place they want to stay in. Repair anything that’s broken, get rid of personal items and decorations and store them in your own room, give them plenty of pillows and ensure everything is washed and sparkling. Look at this guide to a well dressed bed if you need help presenting your bed to your guests. There are more components than you might think when it comes to showing off your bed, so pay close attention to all the details.
Focus on their comfort
If you’re still using a terrible mattress and bed frame that even you wouldn’t sleep on, then how do you expect your guests to sleep there? If you’re unsure on how comfortable your spare bedroom actually is, then a great way to test it is to simply sleep in it for a few nights before they arrive. You might find that the mattress isn’t very good and that you need a new premium mattress to get comfortable. Perhaps you feel a draft during the night because one of the windows isn’t properly secure. You want to fix these comfort issues as soon as possible because there are cases when you might need a contractor to help you fix certain issues.
Comforting amenities
There are several small improvements you can make to your room to temporarily give it some style. For instance, if you set out a tray of extras such as coffee, tea, fresh towels or even bottles of water, then it signifies that those are for your guests, much like how it’s done in a hotel. Ensure that you free up some power outlets so that your guests can charge their devices, and if possible try to fit in a small desk and a few chairs for your guests to use. A bedside table is also a fantastic addition because it allows them to place their phone, glasses and other small items before they go to bed. Place a small tissue box on the bedside table as well so that they don’t need to use their own tissues or run around looking for something to blow their nose with.
