It is something we use every day, we are taught to use them from being little and if you have a schedule you definitely need one! Of course i mean a wrist watch and they have played a big part in bringing me to where i am today. Let me start at the beginning…
When I met Stuart he whisked me away for a night in a hotel, we went to a cinema, back to the hotel for dinner then headed up to a 50s theme room (he knew me well from the start!) The bed was a big cadilac and I wasn’t surprised when Stuart asked me to join him…don’t worry I’m not going x rated. Underneath the pillow was a gift for me, a little box that was delicately wrapped and fastened with ribbon. Inside was a gold Ellesse watch, it was the most beautiful thing anyone had ever done for me and the most beautiful gift I could ever hope to receive. I think it was the thought that had gone into the whole night and this gift that cemented our relationship and made me realise this was someone I wanted to spend forever with.
Fast forward a few years and I got my first paid crafting job, I felt so proud of myself, I hadn’t needed to work all through my pregnancy with Jacob and we were in a good place. I had registered as self employed, was booked to teach a class and was paid swiftly. The suggestion was that I buy something to commemorate my first paid job as a ‘crafter’ to make a statement to myself that ‘I can do this’! Being a sucker for designer but not being able to live that life style I knew exactly what I wanted – a Rolex … but unfortunately I wasn’t paid that much, heck not even enough for a second hand Rolex but I had always adored bling too so I opted for the best of both worlds with a Dolce & Gabbana watch!
I still love this watch and know its around the house somewhere, Evie has taken to wearing it as I cant get a battery for it without sending it away and thats not something im willing to risk with Royal Mail being the way they are!
Jumping ahead a few more years I was delighted to be writing my first cookbook! After a whole year of publishing weekly recipes and ‘how to’ lists I was picked up by a publishing house to create my own book, and after a whole year of work it was ready to be published! By way of celebrating my commission for pre orders I knew what my first purchase would be….
Having looked this time at many second hand watches I fell in love with a tortoise shell Michael Korrs oversize watch. My wrists aren’t the most delicate so carrying off a small strap is difficult and the amount of times I wrestle with little ones means I am always paranoid about damage to clothing, jewellery etc so the oversize straps are perfect. I love the fact it is again a designer name and although one of the more inexpensive designer items it is still something that is thought of as enough of a treat to myself that I am proud i worked hard to pay for it myself.
Who knows what the future holds but I am sure there may be more milestones marked by watches!
Do you have something that you treat yourself to if given the chance?
XOXO
Debbie
