It may only be February, but the signs of spring are beginning to peak through the grey of winter. The days are a little bit longer, the sunshine feels warmer on your skin, and the first shoots of crocuses and bluebells begin to sprout through. It’s difficult not to associate spring with renewal, revival and the promise of summer just around the corner. There might still be some bite to come in this winter, but there’s a promise of a warmer future to come.
While it’s easy to anticipate longer days and warmer weather, there are some behaviours that we leave behind in winter. Things we do and how we act, the hobbies and enjoyments, that are somewhat saddening to leave behind. The change of seasons transforms every aspect of our lives, and before long, the change will be upon us once again. Some of that change is positive; some you won’t welcome the return of. After long months of hibernation, it can take a little getting used to.
Your Delightful Evenings In Become… Your Long Nights Outside
One of the blessings of the warmer months is that the world opens up to you, rather than being a beast of bad weather you have to take shelter from. No longer will you have to curl up and hide as the temperatures drop; you can stay up after sundown and relax as the mayflies dance around you.
Your Mornings Scraping Ice Off The Windscreen Become… Waking Up To Be Bathed In Sunshine
It’s a simple biological fact that humans feel better when we’re surrounded by sunlight. The feeling in winter of waking in darkness and then having to freeze your fingers as you scrape ice from your car – well, let’s just say it’s one it’s easy to leave in December!
Your Cosy Conservatory Becomes… The Humid, Hot Box of Hell
Of course, there are some negatives to come as well. For the winter months, your conservatory is a warm area that lets you see out into the crisp winter weather without being enveloped in it. In summer, it’s a hot, sweaty, oven of a room that you only go into to open windows and plead for mercy. Guardian warm roof, blinds, and adequate air conditioning can make a big difference, but you’ll still be welcoming autumn with open arms.
Your Layers of Clothes Become… Layers of Deodorant
Layering can be a fashion choice the entire year round, but it’s a necessity through winter. By the time summer rolls around, you still have to layer, but this time products to keep you feeling fresh. Is it as comforting as a big woollen jumper protecting you from the worst of the cold? No. Is it as necessary? Oh yes.
Your Low Energy and Hibernation Becomes… Zest and Pep For Life
Possibly the biggest change – and undoubtedly the most beneficial – is the way your energy level switches as we approach spring and summer. With more sunlight, longer days and warmer weather to keep us moving, our energy goes through the roof, and our mood goes with it. We suddenly have time for long walks, exercise, home improvement and our hobbies. That’s not to say winter relentlessly renders us all sloths, but we definitely have more motivation to be up and active when it’s not risking frostbite to do so.
XOXO
