Christmas is coming and so are the dark nights, there is nothing better than being wrapped up warm with a hot chocolate and settling down to watch something with the family. Everyone loves a good box set so I thought I would give you a run down of my favourite ones to watch this holiday season! They are not all snow and Santa so be prepared for snuggling up and possibly hiding behind a cushion!
Ok, first up is something I watch with the girls, we love Home Alone. I can remember watching this when it was first released, I was 16 and enjoyed it as much then as I do now. The girls love the slapstick comedy of the baddies and we sit and giggle together talking about what they would get up to if they were left alone over the holidays. No where near as much fun as Kevin McCallister and crew though, although I’m sure Amelia could give Macaulay Culkin a run for his money.
Up next is Gremlins, now you may be thinking what on earth is Christmassy about little evil fur balls BUT the original takes place at Christmas and over the whole holiday period. Gizmo is a Christmas gift from Billys Dad and the whole town is decorated, the indoor scenes involved Christmas Trees and the Gremlins dressing in Santa costumes and caroling….if ever there was a season to watch this box set its Christmas! I am yet to introduce the girls to this one as I think they may still be a bit little, however I will watch it again myself first and make sure there isn’t anything too bad in there – I think the first was a lot more comical than the others.
I love a good horror movie so this next one is obviously not one I watch with the girls! Child’s Play is about a toy called Buddi who inherits the soul of a murderer and goes on a rampage. There really isn’t anything remotely Christmassy about these movies except that he was a present, it is a little dated and obviously hard to believe, that a doll can come to life and over power fully grown adults but it is one of those movies that will have you jumping and watching your beloved toys all the same!
Die Hard. The Classic, Christmas not Christmas movie! Set on Christmas Eve, the original movie sees Bruce Willis tackle baddies and single handedly save an office full of workers (including his wife) while knocking out cheesy one liners throughout. I love this set of movies for the pure escapism and this is always on my go to list last thing at night to fall asleep to – I have seen it that many times I know it word for word anyway.
Last but certainly not least is The Santa Claus movies. Who doesn’t love that a busy businessman names Scott Calvin (SC – Santa Clause) becomes Father Christmas. With the help of Elves at the North Pole and the belief from his son, Charlie, Scott is no doubt one of the best Santa Clauses in movie history. Thankfully the second and third movies are just as good as the first and carry on with the festive spirit, involving not only the Tooth Fairy and Father Time but Jack Frost too.
What is your favourite Christmas box set? Is there something you consider not Christmassy at all yet you watch every year?
XOXO
Debbie
