Do you know what the worst job in the world is in the home? It’s cleaning. Cooking is wonderful – you’re creating something from nothing but ingredients. Even laundry has its merits…mainly because there’s an automatic machine doing it for you, but still. Cleaning is the worst. Scrubbing skirting boards, vacuuming carpets and mopping floors is bleach-smelling agony and if you’re like most people, you only do it because you have to rather than because you enjoy it! Because cleaning is such a horrid job, we’ve piled together some cleaning hacks that will make your mopping hours far easier, faster and more bearable:
If you have laminate flooring or tiled flooring in your home, invest in some fleece socks. Cheap ones, not ones you plan to use as cosy toes. Skate and slide around the floor of the house to dust and make a game of it. It’s far more fun to skid around and try not to land on your bum, than get on your hands and knees and dust.
Before you cook your evening meal, line your trays with foil. By doing that and folding over the edges, all you have to do afterwards is drop the foil into the bin! You’ve just cleaned the trays without any elbow grease at the sink. Voila!
When you need to mop floors or clean windows, invest in boiling water taps. No need to wait for heaters to heat up your hot water or boil kettles to fill your outside buckets when you can have a tap that instantly provides bacteria-killing temperatures. It’s win-win for you!
Did you know soaps and bath bombs cause bath scum and not shower gels? If you use the dregs of a shower gel bottle to give your shower a quick scrub, you’ll be cleaning it, not paying out for new bleaches and have used a proper detergent on dirty bathroom areas.
Juicing and smoothies make the summer days go by beautifully but cleaning a blender is a drag. Squirt some dish soap and hot water into the blender and give it a whizz. The spinning speeds of the blades will clean the blender for you – just be careful when you dry it out so you don’t cut yourself!
If you line your refrigerator shelves with cling film, you’ll find it far easier to clean up spills that happen from open bottles or jars.
Babies have a habit of gumming all over their toys, books and everything in between. If it is hard plastic, rather than wipe over every individual toy, bung them in the dishwasher! One wash, one soap and all are sterile again without much effort from you.
You can hate cleaning, but it still has to be done. If you take the time to be lazy enough to use the hacks above, you’ll enter a new phase in your life called ‘total bliss’ where you can kick back and have a sparklingly clean house. A clean house like in those adverts where everything goes ‘ting!’.
XOXO
