Some homeowners believe they have to spend thousands to get their homes looking great. They also feel doing so will increase the value of their properties. While both of those statements are true, spending big money isn’t the only way to achieve those goals.
As with most things in life, there is more than one way to do something. In this article, I am going to share with you strategies to revamp your home without hurting your wallet! Here is what you need to know:
You don’t need to buy a new kitchen: revamp your existing one!
We often get told that spending money on a brand new kitchen is a wise investment. But, what you may not know is you can refresh what you’ve already got. The result? A nice-looking kitchen and more money in the bank!
So, what can you do to your existing kitchen? First of all, you can paint cupboard doors and panels. Even if they are all made from MDF and have vinyl covers! Next, you can replace the handles with nicer designs to suit your tastes.
When it comes to countertops, you have two options. The first is to replace them with new ones. The second is to recover them either with new vinyl patterns or paint.
What about the flooring? Well, if you have floor tiles, investing in a steam cleaner can revitalise them! Hate the colour? Believe it or not, it’s also possible to paint floor tiles as well – even ceramic ones! Now you don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds on brand new flooring for your kitchen.
Upgrade your light switches and sockets
After a few years, the light switches and sockets in your home will look tired and worn. The cost of replacing them isn’t as expensive as you think. Plus, they can add more value to your home.
You can also use the opportunity to add extra sockets in rooms such as the living room. It makes sense to hire an electrician to carry out the work, but you can do the preparation yourself. If you’ve got a hammer and chisel, you can “chase” holes in the walls for the extra sockets and wiring.
When everything gets fitted, buy a tub of ready mixed plaster to cover the holes. And once it’s all dry, you can sand any excess plaster down and paint to match the rest of the wall. Yes; it’s as easy as that!
Top tip: consider fitting sockets with USB ports. Doing so means you and future owners can charge gadgets without needing to use a socket.
Freshen up your windows with beautiful curtains
The curtains you have in each of your rooms aren’t just there to keep the light out and the heat inside. Their job is also to provide some aesthetic value to you and your guests.
If your curtains look tired and dirty, you could get them steam cleaned. But, it often makes sense just to replace them with new ones and more fashionable designs and colours.
I recommend getting made to measure curtains for your rooms. They won’t cost you a fortune, and they look nicer!
Paint your interior walls and doors
Some people have a love of colour while others prefer wallpaper. The thing about painting a wall is that it’s easy to change the colour later. With wallpaper, you have to “strip” it off the walls without damaging them! Wallpaper is also a good way to trap moisture in walls and cause mould and condensation problems.
You might not think it, but it’s possible to paint your entire house without spending a fortune! For a start, places like Wilko’s and B&M sell paint cheaply. And if you want your paint at rock-bottom prices, don’t forget the usual DIY stores.
Giving your home’s interior a fresh lick of paint will make it look more modern and maintained. That is particularly true if there are lots of scuff marks on the walls and doors!
Do a little DIY landscaping
It’s important to maintain the kerb appeal of the front of your home. First of all, a well-maintained front garden is an excellent theft deterrent. And, second, it beautifies your street and encourages others to do the same!
You don’t need to spend hundreds hiring a landscape gardener. You could buy some plastic pot plants and grow things from scratch. And you can fix your lawn by purchasing grass seed quite cheaply.
Last, but not least, consider adding a solar LED light by your front door. Good luck!
