A little late in the day due to a lot going on here and my lack of pre scheduling but I am delighted to have the fabulous Helen from Casa Costello as my guest this week!
Tell us a little about you and your blog.
Hi, I’m Helen & I blog at Casa Costello. I’m a Mum to 3 girls, Millie (15), Violet (11) & Tara (6). I blog full time about Food, Family & Lifestyle (and everything in between). I travel a lot around the country with our eldest daughter who is a Senior athlete on the GB squad for Synchronised Swimming. When I get chance I also make celebration cakes – I used to do this as a business but really only tend to make for friends and family now, due to time
Have you always enjoyed being in the kitchen or is it something you started when blogging?
My love for cooking and baking only really started when I got my first house with my husband. Until then, I was hopeless. I have no idea how I survived 4 years at uni. I started blogging as an extension to my cake decorating business – People loved reading about their cakes and the stories behind why they chose a particular design. They would then tell their friends about being featured on the blog and word would spread which meant repeat business.
If you had an entire day to yourself, what would you cook?
It would be a cake of some description with probably a meringue on the side. I just love the chemistry of how meringue comes together.
If you could only pack 3 baking/cookery items for a weekend away, what would you take?
Ooh a difficult one … Probably one of my Kitchen Aids (as long as someone else carried it – they are far too heavy!), A cake tin & a spatula.
Do you have a signature dish?
My fruit cake is rather famous!
Have you ever had any kitchen disasters?
Hasn’t every cook? I think I have learnt most from what has gone wrong in the kitchen, rather than what has worked.
Who is your kitchen icon?
Got to be Mary Berry – I loved her even before Bake Off days. I rather enjoy Nigella’s & Nigel Slater’s books too but read them like they are a good reading book rather than cooking from them.
