The kitchen is probably the most important, and most used part of the home for many families, and it’s also one of the main rooms that buyers will need to fall in love with before they agree to purchase a property. So, it’s fair to say that the kitchen needs to look and feel great if you want to make the most of your home and make it as saleable as possible, should you want to move on.
However, that doesn’t mean that you need to spend a fortune of kitchen renovations unless that’s something you’re interested in doing. You can give your kitchen the wow factor simply by adding a splash of colour to the room.
Sound good? Here are some of the simplest and most effective ways to add a splash of colour to your kitchen:
A Bright and Bold Splashback
A bold and beautiful splashback won’t set you back too much money, but it will add a vibrant energy to the room that will completely change the atmosphere in your kitchen. If you choose printed glass splashbacks, you can even add your own unique designs like your favourite landscape scene or abstract painting to the area, which is a great way of making your kitchen stand out from the rest.
Create a Cosy Corner Nook
If you like the idea of transforming your kitchen with colour, but you’re worried about adding too much colour to the whole of the kitchen, one option would be to create a colourful and cosy nook in one corner of the kitchen. For example, you could create a breakfast or dining area, which features colourful chairs and cushions, which will add some colour and style to the room without it being too much.
Paint Your Cabinets
Painting your kitchen cabinets is another good way to add some colour to the kitchen quickly and with a minimal cash outlay. Ideally, you should go for bright sunny colours like oranges, yellows, and even pinks if you’re brave enough, to give the kitchen a lift and make it more appealing to lovers of bold and bright design. If you want to be subtle, you could try painting just part of the cabinets, or only painting alternate units instead of them all.
Add an Accent Wall
Accent walls aren’t just for the living room and bedrooms; they work great in the kitchen too. Painting just one wall in an eye-catching colour will completely transform the room, and you can leave the res to the room neutral, so it doesn’t take much effort to transform the place in this way. If you do choose to add an accent wall, try to choose a wall that doesn’t have too many shelves or accessories on it so that you can get the maximum amount of colour on there for a bigger impact.
Add Accent Areas
If you don’t want to paint a whole wall in a colourful hue, you could try adding a few accent areas of colour instead. For example, you could paint the kitchen window sills, the doors or shelving units to give bursts of colour around the room without overpowering the kitchen with brightness.
Use Colour to Define Different Areas
The kitchen is often a room that is used for a lot of different purposes and separated into many informal areas. For example, there might be a designated cooking area, a dining area, a sitting area and a utility area all in the one space. Using colour, either on the walls or on the floors can be a great way to clearly separate and define each area.
Alternatively, you could use different coloured pieces of furniture, appliances, and accessories in each area for a subtle way of defining each part of the space.
Accessories
Probably the easiest and most affordable way to add a splash of colour to the kitchen is with your accessories. Unless you’re a minimalist, chances are that you’ll have a myriad of accessories, including tea towels, mixers, pots and pans and cutlery in your kitchen and all of these things can be bought in every conceivable colour, so when you need to buy new accessories or appliances, instead of buying plain old black, white or chrome, go for something a bit more colourful and your kitchen will look completely different.
Artwork
We tend to think that artwork is something for the living room more than anywhere else, but artwork is something that can be used to brighten up and add colour to pretty much every room in the home, including the kitchen.
If you want to give your kitchen a more designer feel, choose graphic prints, with a lot of bold lines and shapes. Vintage food and drink signs work particularly well in the kitchen, but if you’re a lover of abstract art or a fan or oil paintings, you don’t have to stick with a kitchen theme, and you can bring any pieces you enjoy into the space.
Paint the Island
If your kitchen has an island, giving it a new coat of paint will create a central block of colour that draws the eyes and makes a massive impact without going over the top.
Colourful Materials
There might not be as many materials in the kitchen as there are in the bedroom, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t utilized materials to your advantage when you’re trying to revamp the kitchen with colour.
For example, you can switch up your boring old curtains with a beautiful bright geometrical patterned pair, or you can throw a few Indian sari cushions on your chairs. Whatever you do, try to mix as many different textures and colours as possible for a dramatic, comfy effect that the whole family will love.
Mix Light with Bright
A great way of maximising the amount of impact colour has on your kitchen is to mix bright colours with lighter neutral woods and paints. If you already have light cabinets, consider leaving them that way and then using some of the other tips in this post to add pops of colour around the place. Because the background is neutral. The colours will stand out more, and it’ll be easier for you to change things up when you get bored with your kitchen’s look.
Colourful Countertops
There are few things that will change the look of your kitchen more dramatically than the addition of colourful Formica countertops in bold primary colours. Not only do they add colour and look much different than the average kitchen countertops in most homes, but they also add a retro 60s feel which is very pleasing to the eye.
A Flourish of Flowers
Of course, you don’t have to make any changes to your kitchen at all; you can add colour by simply bringing more flowers into the space. You don’t have to spend a fortune – even buying a small bunch of daffodils from the supermarket will do – but try to get a good mix of bright colours and combine them with pretty vases that reflect the light to make the most of their beauty.
Consider Chrome
Chrome has always been very popular in the kitchen, and if you’re considering adding colour to your kitchen, and if you don’t want to add too much colour to your kitchen, it’s a good choice because the more shiny surfaces you have, the more the colours you do have in the kitchen will be reflected. The chrome will also catch the light in lots of interesting ways, reflecting it out into the space for a lighter, brighter feeling overall.
